The Commission on Health Care in the 21st Century believes that the goals of the Alliance between the two hospitals, as it was envisioned approximately ten years ago, represent the most feasible approach to meeting the health-care needs of the community. In order to avoid costly duplication of hospital services and to improve quality of care through specialization, the Alliance established a joint framework for collaboration between what would otherwise be two competing institutions. This innovative cooperative Alliance, which has been and will have to be modified, has been an effective relationship in reducing unnecessary duplication of major services in New York State, and communities throughout Suffolk County have benefited from reduced health-care costs and the provision of extensive medical expertise.
The Commission has endorsed the continuation of both hospitals under separate sponsorship that together can achieve even greater economies. Mather and St. Charles are committed to working with one another, and with the members of their joint medical staff, and will attempt to develop meaningful alternative actions, which are in substantial compliance with the recommendations of the Berger Commission. Toward that end, members of the respective Boards and Administrations of Mather and St. Charles have begun a new series of dialogues that will continue over the coming months.
