WHEREAS, The Commission for Health Care in the 21st Century has recommended the closing of St. Charles Hospital’s Emergency Department and the elimination of 77 medical/surgical beds; and
WHEREAS, The Commission’s recommendations became law on January 1, 2007; and
WHEREAS, St. Charles Hospital has provided health care services to the Port Jefferson communities for 100 years; and
WHEREAS, 25,000 residents of the community visit St. Charles Hospital’s Emergency Department each year; and
WHEREAS, St. Charles Hospital is the regional provider of rehabilitation services, the largest provider of orthopedic services in Suffolk County and the sole provider of obstetrical services in the Port Jefferson community; and
WHEREAS, St. Charles Hospital is an economic anchor in the Port Jefferson community with an estimated annual economic impact of $318,787,000.
WHEREAS, St. Charles Hospital is a major employer with 1,400 employees whose expenditures in the community are estimated at $167,601,000 annually; and
WHEREAS, St. Charles Hospital spends approximately $66,194,000 annually in the community on goods and services needed to provide health care, and
WHEREAS, the employees of St. Charles Hospital and the jobs supported indirectly by the facility pay $2,503,000 annually in local sales tax; and
WHEREAS, St. Charles Hospital is critically important to the financial viability of the Village of Port Jefferson; and
WHEREAS, the recommendations as stated would result in access of care issues, longer Emergency Room wait times and deteriorate the high level of quality health care provided to the residents of Port Jefferson community; and
WHEREAS, the Port Jefferson Village Board will support St. Charles Hospital in its development of an alternate plan to the Commission’s recommendations, one that will sustain a financially viable health care institution
